When Colorado transfer guard Desiree Wooten committed to NC State in early May, the expectation was clear: she was arriving in Raleigh for what would be her final season of college basketball.
Multiple reports at the time of her commitment described Wooten as a rising fifth-year senior with one season of eligibility remaining. Wooten herself reinforced that understanding in an interview shortly after choosing the Wolfpack.
“I’m ready to make my last season my best season yet,” Wooten said.
Head coach Wes Moore offered a similar view before the recent court rulings, noting the impact of the new eligibility landscape on his roster.
“I think about our whole team could stay except for maybe Desiree Wooten, who used a redshirt. I’m not sure if she would be able to get that fifth year,” Moore said.
Her college timeline appears to support that assessment. After redshirting her true freshman year at North Texas due to injury in 2022-23, she played three seasons (two at North Texas and one at Colorado). That left her with one year available for 2026-27 under both the previous NCAA eligibility clock and the new “5-for-5” model adopted in June.
Recent court rulings granting an extra year to certain Class of 2022 athletes who completed four seasons without a redshirt do not appear to apply to Wooten. Because of her redshirt year, she falls outside the group of players those injunctions primarily benefit.
It is worth noting, however, that conflicting reports have circulated suggesting Wooten may have two years of eligibility remaining. Those claims have not been independently confirmed by official roster information or statements from the program.
Of course, final eligibility determinations rest with the NC State compliance office, which reviews each case against NCAA rules, any applicable waivers, and the latest legal developments. As of now, this is the best PackWBB can surmise based on the information available.
For Wolfpack fans, the current picture points to Desiree Wooten suiting up for NC State in 2026-27 as a veteran guard looking to make a strong impact in what is expected to be her final college season.
