Five days from the Wofford opener, and the number that stood out the most against UNCW was the one that did not travel well.
NC State went 2-of-10 from three in the 75-40 win. The paint and the defense covered for it. They scored 54 points in the paint and 20 points off turnovers, and UNCW finished with only 15 made field goals. The perimeter was quiet. Wooten played 31 minutes and went 1-of-10. Brooks played only 9:31 after tweaking her hip and scored seven. Pruitt went 1-of-3 from three in her first public minutes. The two guards Moore is counting on to finish what the press starts combined for a quiet night from the floor.
Moore said after the game that they have struggled shooting the ball. He mentioned it when talking about the young players and the new pieces, and he said they got to shoot the ball better. The press and the paint covered for the cold perimeter against an exhibition opponent. That cover will be harder to find once the schedule gets heavier. The Pack has a week to close the gap between the inside production and the outside shooting before games start counting.
The work this week is probably on getting more consistent looks from the perimeter and making the ones that are there. Wofford will be the first public test of whether the three-point shooting can improve enough that the Pack does not have to lean so heavily on the paint and the turnovers. The numbers that will travel are the 54 in the paint and the 20 off turnovers. The number that will not is the 2-of-10 from three. That is the breakdown heading into the opener.
