Four days from the Wofford opener, and one of the unfinished pieces from UNCW was the second-chance points and the rebounding that allowed them.
Moore said after the game that they gave up some offensive rebounds. At halftime, over half of UNCW’s points had come off second-chance opportunities. He said possessions are something they’re really preaching. They got to take care of the ball. They got to limit them to one shot. He also said they let Woodard go get 18 rebounds. That’s scary to think they let that happen against a mid-major program, and they’re going to see a whole lot tougher down the road.
The Pack still won the overall rebounding battle and limited UNCW to 12 second-chance points while grabbing 15 of their own. Samuels finished with 10 boards in 31 minutes. Moore said they need Qadence to be a rebounder and they need some extra help. He said they have times where maybe they’re not physical enough. They don’t deliver a blow when the shot goes up. Instead, they receive a blow and get pushed under. He said the guards are going to have to get in there and help too. They’re going to have to have five people helping instead of relying on one or two.
The work this week is probably about finishing the possession on the defensive end. Not just getting the stop, but making sure the opponent does not get a second look. Wofford is a physical team that values the glass. If the Pack can limit second chances the way they limited them late against UNCW, it will make the other parts of the game easier. The opener will show whether that part of the defense is ready to travel.
