The Slobbering Wolf just got a glow-up, and the timing is chef’s kiss delicious.
NC State’s branding department dropped a press release this week announcing a fresh new version of the legendary Slobbering Wolf logo. The old-school drooling beast that’s been howling around campus (and on dusty vintage tees) since at least the 1960s now has cleaner lines, sharper styling, and a hat that actually says “NC STATE” instead of the cryptic “NCSU.” Because, as the university helpfully pointed out, not everybody outside the Old North State knows what those four letters mean.
Here’s the side-by-side that says it all:

Old school on the right (classic tongue, NCSU lid). New school on the left (modernized, bigger red tongue energy, full “NC STATE” hat). Same chaotic good boy energy, just ready for 2026 merch drops and Instagram close-ups.
The university is clear: this isn’t replacing the vintage mark. The original still lives on in the College Vault Collection for all your throwback needs. It joins the official spirit-mark family alongside the primary Wolf Head (last refreshed in 2005), the Strutting Wolf, and the Block S. All still tightly controlled so official gear helps fund student scholarships. Awoo.
But let’s talk about that timing…
Back in January 2026, then-Wolfpack coach Will Wade went on the radio and casually lit the branding fuse. He said he loved the Slobbering Wolf and wanted to wear it on his sideline jacket… but “they won’t let me.” He also wanted more of those retro “STATE” uniforms that connect to the program’s history. Instead he got “bureaucracy,” “red tape,” and a “scathing email” after the team wore the throwbacks early in the season.
Fans lost their minds (in the most Wolfpack way possible). Social media turned into a branding-department roast session. Open-records emails got dug up. Suddenly the whole conversation about NC State’s logo decisions, nostalgia vs. modern rules, and “why can’t we just lean into the cool old stuff?” was front and center. Wade later apologized for the fan pile-on, told people to aim any frustration at him instead of the hard-working staff, and basically said he learned that Tobacco Road passion hits different.
Fast-forward seven months. Branding drops a cleaner, cooler, more marketable version of the exact logo that caused the uproar. Coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe a bunch of very public “we want the Slobbering Wolf” energy made someone in the office look at the merch potential, the fan demand, and the dollar signs and think… “You know what? Let’s give the people (and the licensing revenue) what they want, just modernized so it plays nicer on everything from hoodies to helmets.”
Whether the January drama directly inspired the refresh or it was already in the pipeline from the broader 2025 brand update, the sequence is hilarious. One minute the coach is getting told “no” on the classic drooler. Next minute the university is rolling out an upgraded edition and basically saying “here’s a bonus new look. Enjoy.”
The vintage version isn’t going anywhere, so pure nostalgia still wins. But now there’s an official, refreshed option that feels a little more 2020s while keeping that signature tongue-out attitude. Expect it to start popping up on gear soon, and expect the usual mix of “finally!” and “they ruined it!” in the replies.
Either way, the Slobbering Wolf is back in the spotlight: cleaner, sharper, and ready to make some money for scholarships.
What do you think of the new look? Better? Worse? Still not as cool as whatever Wade was trying to rock on the sideline last winter? Drop your takes. Awoo.
