Through nine games of the 2026 WNBA season, Dallas Wings rookie guard Aziaha James is quietly making a case for expanded minutes or even a starting role. Coming off the bench at just 11.4 minutes per game, the former NC State standout is averaging 6.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.0 steal while posting an impressive 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio. She shoots 38.9 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from three and a crisp 85.7 percent from the free-throw line.

What stands out most is James’ efficiency relative to her limited role. She scores 0.59 points per minute, higher than Paige Bueckers (0.57) and Arike Ogunbowale (0.46). Her steal rate matches that of starters, and she turns the ball over just 0.6 times per game. Among players with nine appearances and zero starts, James is the only one producing at a near-starter clip in such restricted minutes. The bench unit she anchors, alongside Azzi Fudd and Odyssey Sims, has provided consistent energy and second-unit scoring that keeps Dallas competitive in tight games.

Yet the Wings’ rotation tells a different story. Bueckers (32.3 mpg), Ogunbowale (28.8 mpg) and Jessica Shepard (30.9 mpg) command the heavy minutes, while James sits behind a crowded backcourt. Dallas averages 87.8 points per game as a team, leaning heavily on its star trio. James’ per-minute production suggests she could handle 18–22 minutes without a drop-off and possibly boost the offense’s pace and defensive intensity.

Head coach has praised James’ “spark-plug” mentality, but the numbers raise an obvious question: is the 11.4-minute leash too tight? With the Wings still searching for consistent chemistry nine games in, giving James more floor time could unlock a more dynamic bench and ease the scoring burden on Bueckers and Ogunbowale. At this rate, keeping her glued to the pine may be costing Dallas an edge it can’t afford to leave on the bench.
