7 Quick Takeaways from NC State’s 92-63 Loss to Michigan

  1. Absence of Zoe Brooks was glaring
The All-ACC junior guard (season averages: ~16.1 PPG, 4.3 APG, 4.7 RPG) missed the game with a foot injury from the first round win vs Tennessee. Without her scoring punch and playmaking, NC State’s offense lacked balance, the bench produced only 17 points, and turnovers spiked to a season-high 22. If healthy, Brooks likely adds 15+ points and 4+ assists, cuts down the giveaway count dramatically, improves second-half execution, and keeps this one close instead of a 29-point blowout.
  2. Turnovers were fatal
A season-high 22 giveaways directly led to 35 Michigan points. Michigan committed only six turnovers all game — the disparity in ball security was the single biggest reason the score got out of hand.
  3. Second-half collapse sealed it
NC State trailed just 28-25 at halftime after a gritty defensive effort. Then Michigan poured in 64 points in the final 20 minutes (32 per quarter). The Pack managed only 38. Halftime adjustments and sustained energy were missing.
  4. Zamareya Jones delivered a superstar performance
In a full 40 minutes, she posted 16 points, 5 rebounds, a career-high 9 assists, and a career-high 4 blocks. She was the bright spot and carried the load without Brooks, but one player can’t overcome everything.
  5. Rebounding and interior dominance was a problem
Outrebounded 40-30, with Michigan grabbing 15 offensive boards to NC State’s 3. The Wolverines also won the paint 40-30. Second-chance points and physicality inside were decisively in Michigan’s favor.
  6. Transition defense was non-existent
Michigan forced 14 steals and turned them into 11 fast-break points (plus those 35 points off turnovers). NC State recorded only 2 steals and 5 fast-break points. Michigan’s pressure created easy buckets all night.
  7. A true three-point threat is non-negotiable moving forward
NC State hit just 4-of-13 from deep (30.8%). Michigan drilled 10-of-30, including a blistering 7-of-11 in the fourth quarter that turned a manageable deficit into a rout. The Wolfpack simply don’t have a consistent perimeter shooter to stretch defenses or punish help rotations.
