(Sunday, Feb. 8 – 12:00 PM ET, ACC Network)
1. The Paint Battle – Pierre vs. Freelon
- Khamil Pierre: 11.9 rebounds/game (leads NC State), 16.3 ppg
- Kilah Freelon: 8.7 rebounds/game (leads VT), 31 blocks (team-high)
VT is +5.9 on the glass overall; NC State is +8.6. Whoever wins the rebounding war (especially offensive boards) will control the game. Freelon has been a monster on the offensive glass at home — Pierre must box out and keep her off the boards.
2. Perimeter Shooting & Floor Spacing
- NC State: 31.1% from three (137 made) – Zam Jones is 49-128 (.383)
- Virginia Tech: 31.3% from three (133 made) – Carys Baker 48-123 (.390), Carleigh Wenzel 46-134 (.343)
Both teams live and die by the 3. If Jones and the Pack guards get hot early, they can stretch VT’s defense. If Baker/Wenzel knock down 5–6 threes combined, Cassell gets loud and the Hokies pull away.
3. Bench Depth & Second-Half Energy
- NC State bench: ~15–18 ppg (very consistent lately – Lunan, Quigley, Cox, Collier)
- VT bench: 448 total bench points (18.7 ppg) – led by Samyha Suffren (9.3 ppg)
NC State has shown the ability to maintain energy with its bench in recent games. If the Pack’s reserves can hold their own for 15–18 minutes and keep the score within single digits while starters rest, NC State wins. If the bench gets out-scored by 8–10 like some earlier road games, it’s probably over. This will be the third game in 7days. Bench production is crucial.
4. Turnover Margin & Defensive Pressure
- VT: 8.3 steals/game (199 total), forces 14.0 turnovers/game
- NC State: 6.0 steals/game, only 11.9 turnovers/game, +0.4 turnover margin
Virginia Tech lives on transition and live-ball steals (Wenzel, Suffren, Nelson combine for 89 steals). NC State has been excellent at protecting the ball lately. If the Pack keep turnovers in single digits, they win. If VT forces 15+, the Hokies’ crowd takes over.
5. Second-Half Execution (NC State’s Biggest Season-Long Issue)
NC State has been outscored in the second half in several close losses this year. Virginia Tech is 4-2 at home in ACC play and has out-scored opponents 459-361 in Q4 this season. If the Pack can play the final 20 minutes at the same level they played the first 20 (or close to it), they steal this game on the road. If they have another “energy dip” like they did vs. FSU or UNC, they’ll be in trouble.
6. Intensity & Sense of Urgency – Can the Pack Play a Complete 40 Minutes?
This is Game 1 of the toughest four-game stretch of the season (@VT, @Notre Dame, @Duke, vs Syracuse). NC State knows exactly what’s at stake: a win here keeps them in the top-4 conversation and protects their double-bye path. The question is simple: can this team finally show the sustained intensity and urgency for a full 40 minutes on the road in a hostile environment? We’ve seen flashes all year — now we need to see it for an entire game when it matters most.
Bottom line
This game will be decided by rebounding, threes, turnovers, and whether NC State can finally play a complete 40 minutes with real urgency. Pack by 4–6 if they bring the right intensity for four quarters.
Hokies by 8–10 if there’s another second-half lull.
Let’s go get one in Blacksburg.
