Alright, Wolfpack faithful, tomorrow’s the day we’ve been circling on the calendar—our red-hot NC State squad (15-6, 8-2 ACC) hosts those baby blue invaders from UNC (17-5, 6-3 ACC) at Reynolds Coliseum for the 21st annual Play4Kay game.
Tip-off’s at 6 p.m. on ESPN2, and with us riding a two-game win streak while they’re on a four-gamer, this rivalry clash has all the makings of a classic.
But let’s break down these Tar Heels from a Pack perspective: who’s hot, where they’re vulnerable, and how Coach Moore’s crew can send ’em back to Chapel Hill with another L in this series (we’ve won 13 of the last 20, remember?).
UNC’s Season So Far: Solid, But Not Unbeatable
The Heels sit at 17-5 overall and 6-3 in the ACC, good for seventh in the conference.
They’ve got a gaudy +18.1 scoring margin, averaging 76.7 PPG while holding opponents to just 58.5—tops in the league for defense.
Their schedule’s been softish non-conference (wins over cupcakes like N.C. Central 90-42 and Elon 71-37), but they’ve taken lumps against elites: losses to UCLA (60-78), Texas (64-79), Louisville (66-76 OT), Stanford (71-77 OT), and Notre Dame (50-73).
Lately, they’re streaking with wins over Miami (73-62), FSU (82-55), GT (54-46), and Syracuse (77-71 OT)—showing grit in close ones but struggling on the road (4-2 away).
From our view? Their defense is legit, forcing 18.3 turnovers per game (+4.5 margin) with 10.0 steals, but we’ve got the edge in rebounding (+8.7 vs. their +6.7) and blocks (3.9 vs. 3.5).
Our offense at 78.9 PPG could test their D, especially since we drop 15.3 assists on .451 FG%—similar efficiency, but we crash the boards harder (44.8 RPG).
Key Tar Heel Threats: Watch These Blue Devils (Er, Heels)
Under Courtney Banghart (now 7-5 against us, but we’ve owned the recent matchups), UNC spreads the wealth—no superstar, but a balanced attack with six players over 8 PPG.
- Ciera Toomey (F, #21): Their anchor at 10.5 PPG on .565 FG%, 7.1 RPG, and 1.5 BPG. At 6’4″, she’s a beast inside—match her with our Khamil Pierre (16.4 PPG, 11.7 RPG) or Tilda Trygger (12.2 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.5 BPG) for a post battle royale. espn.com
- Indya Nivar (G, #24): Pesky all-around with 10.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 3.6 APG, and a whopping 3.0 SPG. She’s their theft queen—our guards like Zoe Brooks (16.3 PPG, 4.8 APG) need to protect the rock (we only turn it over 12.1 times). espn.com
- Nyla Harris (F, #2): Efficient 10.8 PPG on .563 FG%, 6.5 RPG. Another interior force—force her outside where she’s weak (1-10 from three). espn.com
- Lanie Grant (G, #0): Sniper at 9.5 PPG, .406 from deep (39 made). She’ll stretch us—Zamareya Jones (.392 3PT%) can counter. espn.com
- Elina Aarnisalo (G, #17): 9.6 PPG, .358 3PT, 2.4 APG. Solid shooter, but turnover-prone.
Bench like Nyla Brooks (8.2 PPG, .376 3PT) adds depth, but their FT% is a weak .669—foul ’em late and watch ’em brick.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Where We Pounce
Strengths: Elite D (opp .374 FG%, .288 3PT), forcing chaos with steals and a 1.2 A/TO ratio. They shoot .457 FG% overall, .344 from three (8.1 made), and rebound well (39.2 RPG).
goheels.com Banghart’s got ’em playing tough, especially in OT (2-2 this year).Weaknesses (Our Opportunities): Low FT% (.669) could haunt in a close one. They allow opp FT .711 and commit 13.9 TOs—our pressure (6.0 SPG) can flip that. Their opp scores 58.5, but we’ve lit up boards lately (106 at BC).
Road woes: 4-2 away, and Reynolds is a “small gym” fortress (remember Banghart’s jab? We’ve gone 7-0 there lately against ’em).
Matchup Keys: Pack Path to Victory
- Dominate the Glass: Our +8.7 reb margin vs. their +6.7—Pierre and Trygger can outboard Toomey/Harris for second chances.
- Guard Play Wins: Brooks (100 assists) vs. Nivar/Kelly—limit their steals, push tempo for our 15.3 APG.
- Perimeter Battle: Our .314 3PT vs. their D allowing .288—Jones and Lunan ( .385 3PT) heat up, while shutting down Grant/Brooks.
- Force Fouls: Their 16.1 PF per game—attack inside, get to line (we’re .743 FT%).
- Home Energy: Play4Kay crowd will be electric—use it to fuel runs, like our 16-0 first-quarter burst in the ACC Tourney last year.
Prediction: Pack pulls it out 73-68, extending our series edge. Their D is tough, but our offense and boards prevail in a grinder.
Go Pack—let’s make it howl in Reynolds!
