NC State remains in a very strong position at 7-2, holding a clear 3rd place. The win against Virginia (Jan 24) was significant, while the loss to Louisville (Jan 18) means they still need Louisville to falter significantly for a shared top spot. The group of teams at 6-3 is now North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Syracuse.

Let’s continue to assume NC State wins the “likely win” games (BC, FSU, Wake, Pitt), adding 4 wins to their current 7, bringing them to at least 11-2. The remaining 5 games (UNC, VT, ND, Duke, Syracuse) are pivotal.

Scenario 1: NC State finishes 1st (Seed #1)

  • NC State’s Performance: NC State must achieve a nearly perfect run, winning all 9 of its remaining games to finish with a 16-2 ACC record. This includes securing wins against North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Duke, and Syracuse.
  • Louisville & Duke’s Performance: Both Louisville (currently 9-0) and Duke (currently 9-0) would need to lose at least 3 games each in their remaining 9-game schedules (finishing 15-3 or worse). If NC State beats Duke head-to-head, that would be a crucial tie-breaker.
  • Summary: This is still an incredibly challenging path. NC State needs to be virtually flawless through a very tough stretch, and both top-ranked teams need to experience multiple surprising defeats.

Scenario 2: NC State finishes 2nd (Seed #2)

  • NC State’s Performance: NC State needs a phenomenal finish, winning at least 8 of its remaining 9 games to achieve a 15-3 ACC record (e.g., dropping only one tough game, perhaps to Duke, but beating UNC, VT, ND, and Syracuse).
  • Louisville & Duke’s Performance:
    • One of Louisville or Duke continues its dominant run, finishing 1st (e.g., 18-0 or 17-1).
    • The other of Louisville or Duke then needs to drop 4 or more games (e.g., 14-4 or worse), placing them below NC State. NC State beating Duke on Feb 19 would be a critical result to enable this.
  • Summary: This scenario is more plausible than finishing first. NC State would solidify its position as one of the elite teams in the conference, capitalizing on one of the top two teams having a rough patch.

Scenario 3: NC State finishes 3rd (Seed #3)

  • NC State’s Performance: NC State needs a very strong finish, winning 6-7 of its remaining 9 games to achieve a 13-5 or 14-4 ACC record. This means winning the “likely” games and securing 2-3 wins against the strong opponents (UNC, VT, ND, Duke, Syracuse).
  • Louisville & Duke’s Performance: Both Louisville and Duke largely continue their strong performances, securing the 1st and 2nd seeds (e.g., 17-1 and 16-2).
  • Other Contenders: NC State must maintain a better record than the other competitive teams like North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Syracuse (all currently 6-3). Their head-to-head results against these teams will be crucial for tie-breaking purposes. Wins against UNC (Feb 2) and VT (Feb 8) would be particularly important to create separation.
  • Summary: This remains the most likely and achievable strong finish for NC State, positioning them well for the ACC Tournament by finishing above the clustered teams.

Scenario 4: NC State finishes 4th (Seed #4)

  • NC State’s Performance: NC State has a solid but not dominant finish, winning 5-6 of its remaining 9 games to achieve a 12-6 or 13-5 ACC record. This implies they might lose 3 or 4 of their tougher matchups (e.g., to Duke, Virginia Tech, and Notre Dame, or an unexpected upset).
  • Louisville & Duke’s Performance: Both Louisville and Duke finish strong, securing the top two seeds.
  • Other Contenders: At least one of the other strong teams (North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Syracuse) or even Stanford (4-4 with 10 remaining games) has a particularly strong finish, surpassing NC State in the standings due to a better record or tie-breaker advantage.
    • For example, if NC State finishes 12-6, but Virginia Tech goes 8-1 in their remaining games to finish 14-4, VT would take a higher seed.
  • Summary: A respectable performance from NC State could still place them fourth. They would be firmly in the upper tier of the conference but would be outpaced by three other teams who had exceptional seasons.

Key Games for NC State’s Seeding going forward:

  • Feb 2 vs. North Carolina: A crucial rivalry game for bragging rights and standings positioning.
  • Feb 8 at Virginia Tech: A tough road test against a fellow contender.
  • Feb 15 at Notre Dame: Another significant road matchup.
  • Feb 19 at Duke: The single most important game remaining on the schedule for challenging the top two spots.
  • Feb 22 vs. Syracuse: A home game against another 6-3 team.

The path to a top-four seed is well within reach for NC State, but their final standing will heavily depend on their performance in these critical matchups against the other top teams in the ACC.
