Barttorvik T-Rank terms explained

  • AdjOE (Adjusted Offensive Efficiency): How many points a team scores per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponent strength and pace. Higher is better.
Example: 103.4 (#33) means NC State is projected to score about 103 points per 100 possessions and ranks 33rd nationally in offensive efficiency.
  • AdjDE (Adjusted Defensive Efficiency): How many points a team allows per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponent strength and pace. Lower is better.
Example: 80.2 (#20) means NC State is projected to allow about 80 points per 100 possessions and ranks 20th nationally in defensive efficiency.
  • Barthag: A single number that measures a team’s overall strength. It represents the estimated probability that the team would beat an average Division I team on a neutral court. Higher is better (closer to 1.000 = stronger).
Example: .9487 (#24) means NC State is estimated to have roughly a 95% chance of beating an average team and ranks 24th overall.

These metrics power the T-Rank system and give a clearer picture of team quality than win-loss record alone, especially early in the season.

NC State on Barttorvik T-Rank (after 2 games)

Overall Rank: #24 (2-0)
AdjOE: 103.4 (#33)
AdjDE: 80.2 (#20)
Barthag: .9487 (#24)

Positives

  • Defense is the clear strength: AdjDE of 80.2 ranks 20th nationally. They’re making it hard for opponents to score efficiently.
  • Opponent shooting is limited: EFG% defense at 35.6 (#48) and 2P%D at 35.5 (#50) show solid contesting inside and out.
  • Free-throw rate defense is excellent: FTRD of 16.9 ranks #35 — they keep teams off the line.
  • Balanced early profile: The combination of solid offense and better defense has them comfortably in the top 25 on T-Rank after just two games.
  • Tempo is reasonable: AdjT around 74.9 — not extreme, which fits a controlled style.

Negatives / Areas to watch

  • Offense is only average so far: AdjOE of 103.4 ranks just 33rd. It’s functional but not elite yet.
  • Shooting efficiency is middle of the pack: EFG% of 53.8 ranks #43. Not a major problem, but not a strength either.
  • Turnover rate on offense: TOR of 16.8 ranks #47 — solid, but not outstanding.
  • Offensive rebounding is mediocre: ORB% of 37.5 ranks #101.
  • 3-point shooting: 3P% of 28.9 ranks #145 — the outside shot isn’t falling at a high rate yet.
  • Sample size: Only 2 games against weaker opponents (Wofford and Campbell). The numbers look good, but the real test starts against Kentucky.

Simple summary

Defense is carrying them right now — that’s the biggest positive and why they’re #24 overall. The offense is fine but not special yet (shooting and rebounding on that end are the main soft spots). Against a higher-ranked team like Kentucky, the defense will be stressed more, and they’ll need the offense to be more consistent.

These are early-season numbers and will move as they play better competition.
