NC State rolled past Campbell 80-45 at Reynolds Coliseum to improve to 2-0. The Pack forced 24 turnovers, turned them into 24 points, and added 31 fast-break points and 20 steals while shooting 33-of-67 (49 percent) from the field. Khamil Pierre led the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds, and the Wolfpack controlled the game after a strong second quarter.
1. Ky’She Lunan has some jets.
When she goes, she is on a whole different level than whoever else is on the floor. Lunan finished with 5 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals in 30 minutes, and the speed showed up in the open floor and on the defensive end. We will see how this travels Sunday against a top-20 Kentucky.
2. The off-season work this staff has done is commendable.
To regroup, change the style of play, and then watch it show up on the court the way it has is special to watch. The pace, the pressure, and the ability to turn defense into easy offense are not accidents. It is the product of a clear plan that is already paying off in the early going.
3. This was a tough game to fully judge the Pack’s performance.
Campbell’s turnovers were abysmal. Give the Pack credit for taking advantage of what the coaches saw on film — Campbell leaked the ball against Austin Peay, and NC State made sure that trend continued at Reynolds. Twenty steals and 24 points off turnovers will win a lot of games, but the quality of the opponent makes it harder to project exactly what this looks like against better teams.
4. The Trivette substitution in the first quarter was a great move by Coach Moore.
It brought instant energy to a struggling offense against the Campbell zone. The freshman finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting (including a three) in 13 minutes. She continues to look like a player who can impact the game right away.
5. Khamil Pierre is serving notice to the ACC.
She refuses to be overlooked. Pierre put up 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting, grabbed 11 rebounds, and added 3 steals and 2 blocks in 27 minutes. The motor, the finishing around the rim, and the rebounding are all at a high level right now.
6. Wooten is starting to get comfortable in her role.
Especially on offense, her decision-making and ability to work her game into the flow of the offense are improving. She finished with 8 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds in 32 minutes. Defensively, she is a strong on-ball defender opposite Ky’She. Guards are going to struggle against these two.
7. There is no doubt this is Khamil and Zoe’s team. That’s a good thing.
Last year, with no seniors and a group still adjusting without Hayes, Rivers, and James, they weren’t ready for that role. This year they are. Brooks added 16 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals, and the two of them are setting the tone on both ends. The rest of the roster is fitting around them, and that is exactly what this team needs heading into the tougher part of the schedule.
