NC State is up 28 at the break in the season opener at Reynolds. The Pack has controlled the game from the jump, and the margin is the product of a clear adjustment. Wofford’s plan was to collapse on Khamil Pierre whenever the ball went inside. The Pack has answered by stretching the floor and making them pay from three. That is a different look than the exhibitions, and it has come with an early contribution from Desiree Wooten.

1. They collapsed on Pierre. The Pack made them pay from three.

It was obvious what Wofford wanted to do. When the ball worked inside, the Terriers collapsed on Pierre. That is the right idea against a player who has been efficient in the paint. The Pack has answered by kicking it out and knocking down threes. The perimeter has looked more comfortable than it did in the exhibitions, and the space has come from Wofford’s decision to load up inside. It is a refreshing look for a group that spent the preseason waiting to see if the three would show up when it mattered.

2. Hello Desiree Wooten.

This is exactly why they brought her in. Wooten has 8 points on 2-for-4 from three in the first half. She has been the one who has made Wofford’s collapse on Pierre cost them. The shot has been there, and she has taken it. After two exhibitions where the guard line was still sorting itself out, this is the first half that looks like the version Moore has been describing.

Quote of the week

“I think that’s what a team is all about. It’s more than just a game for us. I think we all really care for each other on and off the court. Everyone’s just super genuine, and of course we want to see each other win. So seeing that on a big stage is really cool.”
