One day from the Wofford opener, and the last exhibition left a clear split between the numbers that should travel and the ones that still need work.
What worked against UNCW was the paint and the defense that fed it. NC State scored 54 points in the paint and 20 points off turnovers. UNCW finished with only 15 made field goals on 51 attempts. Pierre went 12-of-17 for 27 points in 25 minutes. The rebounding edge tilted the Pack’s way in the end. Samuels finished with 10 boards. Those are the parts that looked finished.
What did not was the perimeter and the finishing from the guard line. The Pack went 2-of-10 from three. Brooks was limited to 9:31 after tweaking her hip. Wooten went 1-of-10 in 31 minutes. Second-chance points were an issue early, and Moore said they let Woodard get 18 rebounds. He also said they have spurts and flashes, but they’ve got to put 40 minutes together. They got to shoot the ball better, take care of the ball better, and limit opponents to one shot.
The numbers that will travel are the 54 in the paint, the 20 off turnovers, and Pierre’s efficiency. The number that will not is the 2-of-10 from three. The Pack has had a week to close the gap between the two. Wofford will be the first public look at whether the identity that showed up in spurts against UNCW can show up for a full game that counts. The opener is Monday at 5 p.m. at Reynolds on ACCNX.
