Two days from the Wofford opener, and one of the clearer questions coming out of UNCW is what the guard line looks like when Brooks is limited and the three is not falling.

Brooks played only 9:31 after tweaking her hip earlier in the week and scored seven. Wooten played 31 minutes and went 1-of-10. The two guards Moore is counting on to finish what the press starts combined for a quiet night from the floor. Pruitt went 1-of-3 from three in her first public minutes and played 20. Trivette had four points and six assists in 15 minutes. Moore said he is rotating who starts because several guards could make an argument and because people are nicked up. He said they got three people that are capable of playing point, which is important, but with Zoe not playing a lot and others banged up, it’s still kind of short-handed. They need nine or 10 people to be able to give them some minutes when they need it.

The depth showed up against UNCW. All 12 players got at least four minutes. The younger pieces looked comfortable in spots. But the night also showed the limitations that come with it. When the three-point shooting was cold and Brooks was limited, the Pack leaned on the paint and the defense. That worked against an exhibition opponent. It will be harder to find that same cover once the schedule gets heavier.

The work this week is probably been about finding a consistent version of the guard line. Not just the minutes, but the decisions and the finishing when the threes are not falling. Wofford will be the first public look at whether that part of the roster is ready to travel with the rest of the identity.

Quote of the week

“I think that’s what a team is all about. It’s more than just a game for us. I think we all really care for each other on and off the court. Everyone’s just super genuine, and of course we want to see each other win. So seeing that on a big stage is really cool.”
