UNC Wilmington finished 7-24 last season and last in the CAA. Nicole Woods is in her fourth year. The roster is not the one that went 2-16 in the league. The Seahawks added a wave of portal players, including Loghan Johnson from West Virginia, Naylee Cortes from Charleston, Bella Toomey from Fairleigh Dickinson, and Sienna Dauer from Davidson. This is their first public look too. They will not arrive with a finished half-court offense. They will arrive with bodies who have played somewhere else.
The Pack question is whether the first-quarter version from High Point lasts past 10 minutes. Against the Panthers it was a 20-0 run, 27-8 after one, six steals already in, and 26 points off 18 turnovers by the end. High Point won the second quarter. Moore said the film would not be much fun. UNCW is the next chance to see if the press and the gaps still show up once the opponent adjusts. The three-point line is the other carryover. NC State went 8-of-29, 27.6 percent, against High Point. That number does not travel. Saturday is the last public look before the real schedule starts.
Brooks looked comfortable getting out on the foot in the first exhibition. The ball still runs through her. The shot did not. Pierre and Leye gave the outline of the frontcourt Moore wants. Pruitt still has not checked in. None of that needs a full scouting report here. It needs one more night against a team that is also sorting itself out.
Saturday is the window. The vision was real for a quarter against High Point. UNCW is the test of whether it lasts.
